Last February 26, Ascott Makati received EDGE green building certification from the financial advisory and asset-management institution International Finance Corporation (IFC)—the first property in the country to earn such a distinction in its service residence category.

EDGE is an innovative green building certification system that helps reduce a building’s energy and water consumption and decrease greenhouse-gas emissions, which in turn drives operational efficiency while reducing environmental impacts.

Ascott Makati successfully attained EDGE’s minimum standard for a 20% reduction in the use of electricity and water, and the energy that goes into making the construction materials. The certification creates an opportunity for high-performing urban dwellings to follow suit, because while there are unique operational requirements and building elements for serviced residences which affect consumption patterns, EDGE’s Service Residence category ensures an accurate benchmark against which properties can be measured and awarded.

“Our commitment to EDGE is an acknowledgement of the premium service we bring to our guests through sustainable practices,” says The Ascott Limited Philippines’ Area Head for Luzon Philip Barnes. “The certification will pave the way for more properties to be certified under this international green benchmark. The EDGE certification is a great beginning to our partnership with IFC, which includes expanding research and implementing the sustainable design of serviced residences in emerging regions.”

“We want to be leaders in the serviced residence industry’s development of green technology and design practices,” says The Ascott Limited Philippines Country General Manager Daniel Wee. “We need to be rooted in our vision to uphold and advance our procedures for protecting the environment, for the benefit of our customers.”

The obtaining of EDGE certification status by Ascott Makati is considered a game-changer in the serviced residence industry.
